Summary of Main Duties and Responsibilities
The successful HCA candidate will be directly involved in the patient environment and support processes. The primary responsibilities of this role are categorized into patient assistance, environmental maintenance, and professional conduct:
Direct Patient Assistance
- Mobility and Safety: Assisting nurses in turning, moving, or transporting patients via stretcher or wheelchair, ensuring proper patient handling techniques are used to preserve dignity.
- Personal Needs: Acting as a chaperone for patients as required, preserving their privacy and dignity.
- Nutrition Support: Assisting with meal tray delivery and return, accurately noting fluids taken, and providing assistance to patients who are unable to feed themselves.
- Comfort: Assisting with linen changes, including making an unoccupied bed or assisting a Registered Nurse (RN) to make an occupied bed.
- Clinical Support: Weighing of ambulatory patients and accompanying patients for diagnostic procedures such as X-ray, ECG, and CT Scans.
Clinical and Environmental Support
- Cleanliness and Safety: Maintaining a safe, clean environment at all times, strictly adhering to approved infection control practices and reporting any unsafe situations immediately to the team leader.
- Post-Procedure Care: Cleaning up after procedures, treating used instruments as per standard precautions.
- Stock Management: Checking and stocking supply rooms as designated by the team leader and preparing and stocking clinical areas in line with hospital protocols.
- Equipment Maintenance: Utilizing and ensuring the maintenance of equipment and instruments, promptly reporting any damages or malfunctioning equipment to the Bio-Medical department and the Nurse in Charge. This also includes performing quality control checks on refrigerators and monitoring room temperatures.
- Emergency Response: Initiating emergency, safety practices, and fire safety measures as necessary.
Professional and Compliance Responsibilities
- UHS Culture: Actively participating in upholding and promoting the vision and culture of University Hospital Sharjah.
- Accreditation: Participating in all aspects of the International Accreditation Programme (such as JCI), ensuring UHS attains and maintains international standards.
- Compliance: Fully complying with all UHS policies, procedures, fire regulations, and standards set by the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the Faculty of Directors of Nursing (FDON).
- Incident Reporting: Reporting all incidents through agreed channels and the chain of command, ensuring an Incident Report is completed and submitted.
- Continuous Improvement: Participating in nursing continuous quality improvement initiatives, in-service education programs, unit meetings, and committee functions as assigned.
Position Requirements and Qualifications
